A Mudroom is a Great Addition to Any Home

A very helpful room to have in any house, especially one with kids and pets, is a mudroom. This is a small room or entryway where shoes, coats, backpacks, and much more can be easily dropped of when you enter the house, and easily picked up when you leave.  Any house for sale at the Lake of the Ozarks should have this practical room to offer.  It's nice to have a spot to contain everything. Plus, with all of the lake activities and changes in weather in this area, it's the perfect addition so that you don't have to undress outside after a messy day.

Growing families especially love seeing a mudroom in a potential home, but they are very useful for anyone.  A small, side room near the garage or entryway is the best spot to place a mudroom if possible.  This keeps you from trekking through multiple rooms with all of your stuff.  Don't worry if you don't have a room especially for this.  You can use an empty wall in an entryway to create space that is attractive and functional.  It shows off a great way to unexpectedly use an area of the house, and home buyers love that.

A family-sized closet.

This is the place to keep the clothing and items that your family will need when they leave the house.  Organization is important, because any time that you share a space, if there isn't a system, things won't be where you can find them in a hurry.  One or two hooks on the wall for each person in the home, labeled just for them, can hold coats and backpacks.  If you have a hanging rack installed, use a different colored hanger for each person  Shelves all along one wall of the mudroom can be filled with baskets or containers to hold smaller items, like keys, chargers, gloves, hats, etc...

A place to corral wet & muddy messes.

Muddy shoes contributed to the name given to this specific room.  A mudroom is a wonderful place to kick off muddy shoes, drop off wet swimming towels, or drain an umbrella after a rainstorm.  A thick , absorbent rug should can included to catch the mess, but make sure that it can easily be washed when it collects too much gook.  Carpet in here is never a good idea.  If there is enough space where you are planning your mudroom, a washer and dryer are excellent to include.  Then you can simply throw the extra-gross or wet items directly into the washer and not have to worry about transporting them to the laundry room later.

Activity Central

Sports equipment can take over a home quickly.  A mudroom can keep all of it in one spot, ready to grab and go when practices or games roll around.  Individual cubbies or baskets for each family member helps greatly with organization. Homework can be waiting to pick up, making mornings with kids flow quickly.

Before deciding on how you will design your mudroom, here are a few things to consider:
  • What's the weather like in your area?
  • What type of activities are you involved in, and what type of gear to you need for them?
  • Which door do you use most often to enter and leave the home?

When there is a special space for all of your stuff, you will be able to get in and out of the house quickly and easily.  You will also be able to keep a lot of mess from the outdoors out of your main living areas.  A spot to make your own mudroom is a good thing to keep in mind when you are searching for real estate at the Lake of the Ozarks.  When you are ready to sell your house, this addition will be a welcome sight for home buyers.
