Board The Pets
Nobody wants to be watching out for a nosy dog or skittish cat while trying to move. If you have pets, it may be best to send them to daycare or a kennel while you move. Not only will it make your move easier, but it will also give them less of a chance of escaping. In addition, if you turn the heat down, they will need a warm place to stay while you move.
Clear A Path
It's quite dangerous to try and move a couch on an icy sidewalk. If it had recently snowed, be sure to salt, shovel or snow blow any major walk paths you will be using while moving. That way your belongings, but most importantly you will be safe during the move.
Keep Warm
Besides dressing in warm clothes, it is also a good idea to keep warm from the inside out. Keep either warm coffee available or cook up some warm cider or hot chocolate in a crock pot to keep warm while moving. When you can't feel your fingers anymore, take a break and enjoy something warm to drink. After a little break, you will feel rejuvenated and ready to get moving again.
Check The Utilities
Nothing would be worse after a full day of moving than sleeping in the freezing cold because the furnace doesn't work. Make sure that you check all the utilities. Check that the water is turned on and that the pipes aren't frozen as well as your cable and internet are switched over to your new home.
Have Blankets, Towels & Sheets Handy
The weather in Missouri is quite unpredictable. You can check the weather all you want, but sometimes we don't know what's going to happen the day of the move. Because of this, it is a good idea to keep blankets, towels and sheets available to protect our valuables in case of a freak rain or snow storm.
Protect The Floors
Because of the weather, it is a good idea to cover the floors to protect the carpet and hardwood. Buy tarp or drop cloth to create paths from the door to the different rooms in your new home.
Lower The Temperature
With people coming in and out of the house and leaving the door open, your furnace will be working overtime. Give it a break and turn the temperature down a few degrees.
