Tips for a Low-Stress Move

Moving from one home to another is a daunting task that can easily become stressful. In fact, it’s considered to be the 3rd most stressful life event. You often have a deadline of when you have to be out of your current residence and you have to wait for the closing to move into your new place. With a little planning and anticipation though, you can reduce the stress on moving day. Keep reading for a few tips from your Lake of the Ozarks real estate agent.

1. Make a Plan Before You Start Packing.

Before you even start packing, make a plan for how the days leading up to moving day and how the actual moving day will go. Start early and give yourself enough time. Rushing through packing and doing everything last minute really adds a lot of stress. Make a list of utility companies, such as electric, water, internet, cable, etc. that you will need to call and either cancel or transfer service for. Set aside some time to fill out a change of address form. While you can do this through the post office, please note that you may have to contact individual companies to notify them of your address change.

2. Get Rid of the Clutter.

Moving is the perfect time to de-clutter your home. Getting rid of that un-useful stuff will help you be and feel more organized. Now’s the time to go through your clothes and get rid of the ones you never wear anymore. Do you have items that have been sitting on a shelf that you haven’t touched in over a year? Is your bookshelf overflowing with books you’ll never read? Try to get rid of some of these items. There’s nothing more frustrating than packing things you’re going to get rid of after the move.

3. Take Care of Yourself.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the packing and trying to get everything done on time. However, you will be more stressed if you don’t take some time to take care of yourself. Make sure you get plenty of sleep and avoid staying up too late packing. Take breaks while you’re packing so you don’t wear yourself out too quickly. Be sure to eat some healthy foods. It’s really easy to just grab a bunch of quick junk food while you are busily packing away. Don’t neglect yourself, or your children, during the moving process.

4. Begin Packing in an Organized Fashion.

Once you’ve begun packing, consider labeling your boxes according to which room they belong in. Then if you have others helping you unpack, those boxes can be taken straight to that room instead of piling up in your living room. When packing boxes, ensure that you make them light enough that they can be easily carried by one person. For blankets and other soft items, consider getting some space saver bags to store them in. This will make those items much lighter and easier to work with than stuffing it in large awkward boxes.

5. Think About What You’ll Need Immediately.

Be sure to pack a box with items you will need immediately after you move in. This box could include your coffee maker with coffee and filters, a couple forks and plates or disposable dinnerware, toilet paper and some snacks like cereal bars or trail mix. Keep that box separate from the rest where you can easily get to it. This will keep you from digging through a bunch of boxes the first morning in your new house.

6. Delegate Tasks on Moving Day.

Whether you’ve hired a moving company or just have friends and family helping you, don’t try to do everything yourself. Be sure to delegate tasks to others to take some of the stress off yourself. If you’ve labeled your boxes, it will be easy for those helping you to keep things organized. Think about the things you will need first in your new home and what can stay in boxes for a couple days if needed. Those items, such as the bedroom furniture and bedding boxes will need to come out first so you have a place to sleep that night. The kitchen and living room boxes can likely get stacked in a pile and dealt with at a later date.

7. Allow Time for Unpacking After Moving Day.

Be mentally prepared to feel uprooted for a while. Seeing all your things in boxes can be overwhelming. Lower your stress levels by focusing on one room at a time. Looking at a completed room, rather than several half-completed rooms, will lift your spirits and make settling into your new home a little easier. Just keep in mind that it will take some time for this new space to feel like your own.
