7 Tips For Moving With Children

Whether it's across town or to another state, moving can be stressful. Adding kids into the mix and it can be challenging. However, it isn't impossible, and the best real estate agent at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help with seven tips for those planning a move with children:

1. Let Them Know What's Happening

Even if they are little, let them know what is going on. They may not know what the term"moving" means, but if you explain to them what is happening, it will help them understand. It is also a good idea to find some age-appropriate book about moving.

2. Don't Be Afraid to Ask For Help

Moving is stressful enough, so don't be afraid to ask for help. If needed, ask a friend or relative if they are willing to watch your kids while you pack up areas like the kitchen. You will be surprised how much you can get done when you are not distracted. It will make the move go smoothly since everything was placed in boxes with purpose and not haphazardly thrown together.

3. Keep Them Busy

Let your kids be a part of the process. Although you may have them away while you are packing certain rooms, you can let them help you pack their belongings. You may have to repack it later, but including them in the process will give them some sense of control amongst the chaos. If you are putting some things into storage, ask them what they would like to keep and what they do not mind parting with for a little while.

4. Time Your Move

Although you cannot always control when you are going to move, try to plan it around a calm period in your child's life. Try not to move during big changes in their lives, such as potty training or sleep transitions. Moving in the middle of the school year could also be challenging for them. Life is unpredictable, so if you do need to move during these times, try to make it as seamless as possible and be patient.

5. Be Clear with Your Labeling

This goes for all moves. Try to be as clear as possible with labeling, especially when it comes to boxes of toys. They will want to play with a specific toy and you will not be able to find it fast enough. Do yourself a favor and be as specific as possible as to what is in a box labeled "toys." Include what is in the box, because you will forget later.

6. Make the Trip Easy

If you are moving by plane or car with a recently potty-trained toddler or pre-schooler, think about putting them in pull-ups for the duration of the ride. This will help in case you can't find a bathroom along the way. Another way to make the trip easy for you and your child is by packing them toys and activities to keep them entertained while moving. This can be a stressful time in your life, as well as your kids, make it an adventure and let your kids do things they normally wouldn't, such as having special treats or staying up a little later than normally.

7. Keep The Routine

Although you should take advantage of the chaos and let your kids do new things they normally wouldn't try to go back to your normal routine as soon as you can. Some things may have to change once you're in your new home. However, try to keep as many constants as possible, such as their bedtime routine or other special activities that you do like family game night.
