Prepare Your Home for the Fall Season
Outside your home:
- Inspect and clean out gutters and downspouts.
- Replace any missing or damaged weather stripping on doors and windows.
- Caulk all cracks and gaps to prevent drafts from entering the house.
- Seal up any cracks in sidewalks, driveways, or stairs. If moisture seeps into these and freezes, the cracks will get bigger.
- Inspect the roof for any damage.
- Drain and put away garden hoses.
Inside your home:
- Replace your screens with storm windows.
- Have a professional inspect your heating system.
- Hire a professional chimney sweep to make sure your fireplace is safe and ready to use, and that it's sealed tightly from drafts.
- Drain your water heater and remove any debris that has settled in it.
- Test your fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.
When all of the above items are taken care of, your home will be ready for whatever the colder seasons will bring. This routine maintenance is key to keeping your house in tip-top shape so that it's at it's best if you ever decide to sell. If you are ready to buy a home at the Lake of the Ozarks soon, use this list to inspect important areas that should have been taken care of.
